A USEFUL START · PRINTABLE GUIDE

Measure before you buy storage

Choose storage for what you actually use, and for the space it needs to fit.

A new basket cannot decide what belongs in it. Start with one cupboard, drawer or shelf, sort the contents and then work out whether you need anything new. You can print this page or copy the short planning sheet below.

1. Sort the contents first

Group similar things and decide what stays. Separate items you are still thinking about. Keep frequently used belongings easy to reach. Try containers you already own before buying more.

2. Measure the usable space

Record the inside width, depth and height. Check whether a hinge, pipe, shelf bracket or door reduces the space. Allow room to pull a container out and open its lid. Product measurements may describe the outside rather than the usable inside; check both.

3. Check how you will use it

Can you see the contents, read the label and lift the container comfortably when it is full? Will the drawer still close? Will putting things away be straightforward? Avoid a system that requires moving several heavy boxes every time you need one item. Do not climb or move heavy furniture to measure a space.

4. Set the whole budget

Include delivery and any returns costs. Check the seller’s measurements and return conditions before ordering. A small trial with one container can help you check the fit before buying a whole set. Installation, wall fixing and furniture assembly need a suitable separate arrangement.

Would another pair of hands help?

I can help sort, measure and suggest practical storage within an agreed organising session. Sourcing time uses your booked time; any extra time is £35/hour and agreed first. Each product needs a separate price and your approval. Buying directly from the supplier is usually the simplest arrangement. Product costs, delivery and installation are not included in the session price.
