PRACTICAL GUIDES · LITTLE HELPING HAND

Where to donate, sell or recycle in Bridgend & Porthcawl

Sorting is easier when you have a next step for the things you no longer need.

Start with what you want to keep, then choose a suitable route for the rest. These local and regional options are a starting point: confirm what the organisation accepts, its location and current arrangements before loading the car or booking a collection.

Choose the next step

Keep a “decide later” box too. Agree decisions about shared or inherited belongings with the people entitled to make them. Keep exits and walkways clear while sorting.

Donate furniture and household items

Emmaus South Wales

The Bridgend Superstore and Porthcawl shop provide local donation options. Donation arrangements differ between shops; call first to confirm space and suitability. Emmaus South Wales can be contacted on 01656 750829.

For larger items, ask Emmaus about a collection. Confirm the particular items and their condition before arranging anything.

British Heart Foundation

BHF offers free furniture and electrical-item collections, subject to postcode coverage and acceptance. Its booking page explains condition requirements, including fire labels for upholstered furniture, and items it cannot collect. A request is not a confirmed collection.

Furniture Revival Pyle

The council’s reuse-shop page lists Furniture Revival at Pyle Community Recycling Centre, where household furniture and electrical goods in good condition can be donated or bought. Confirm current arrangements with the site; do not leave donations outside.

Clothes, books and smaller things

Emmaus and Tŷ Hafan are options to explore. Use Tŷ Hafan’s shop finder and donation guidance to find a suitable shop and check your items. Phone before taking a large donation; acceptance and available space can change.

Give it away locally

Bridgend Freegle is a local route for giving and finding items free of charge. Read the group rules, describe the condition clearly and agree a workable collection arrangement. Keep private paperwork out of photos.

Could it be repaired?

Repair Café Porthcawl lists events at SUSSED, James Street. Volunteer repairers try to fix broken or damaged items for free. Check the event listing and item guidance before attending; a repair is not guaranteed.

If you decide to sell

Set a realistic limit on how much time you want to spend. Photograph the item clearly, describe wear or faults and include useful measurements. Follow the marketplace’s payment and collection guidance. If an item does not sell by your chosen date, decide whether to relist, donate or keep it rather than leave it indefinitely in a doorway.

Recycle or book bulky-item collection

For Pyle, Brynmenyn and other borough facilities, use Bridgend Council’s recycling-centre guidance. Confirm opening days, accepted materials and vehicle or permit rules before travelling. Use the current official guidance rather than an old saved timetable.

For large household items that cannot be reused, see the council’s bulky-waste collection service for current charges, eligible items and booking arrangements. If you live outside Bridgend County Borough, confirm the rules with your own council.
