Where to start when decluttering feels too much

Choose one change you would notice tomorrow

Rather than starting with the whole house, choose a small frustration: finding your keys, reaching your everyday clothes or making room to prepare a meal. That gives the session a purpose and a sensible stopping point. A clear section of worktop can be more useful than half-emptying every cupboard.

Make the task smaller than the room

Choose one drawer, one shelf or one category you can comfortably handle. Leave enough time to put things away. Do not empty large wardrobes onto the bed if you need to use it soon. Keep walkways and exits clear throughout.

Use three temporary places

Make a place for things staying here, things belonging elsewhere and things you want to think about. If you decide to pass something on, keep it separate and decide how it will leave. Check that a charity or collection service accepts it before arranging a donation. You do not have to decide about every sentimental object today.

Ask a useful question

Try: do I use this, want this, or have a clear reason to keep it? The answer belongs to you. Someone helping should not throw belongings away without your agreement. For shared items, agree who needs to be involved before sorting them.

Finish by making the space usable

Return the things you keep, take misplaced items to their usual home and write down one next action. Avoid buying containers until you know what remains and have measured the space. If the task is unfinished, make it safe and easy to pick up again.

What if I want someone alongside me?

You do not need to tidy before asking for help. Tell Carla which space is difficult and what you would like to be easier. We agree a manageable focus and work at your pace. A session books time for priorities; it does not guarantee an entire room or home will be finished.
