PRACTICAL HELP WITH CARLA
Practical sorting before a house clearance
Before a home is cleared, I help sort belongings, protect keepsakes and paperwork, and pack items that are staying with you or going to family. You book collections and waste removal directly. We agree who can make decisions before anything is set aside to leave.
Serving Bridgend, Porthcawl, Cowbridge, Cardiff, Penarth, Barry and surrounding areas. Travel is included for my own visits.
Talk to Carla about your projectHow it works
First we agree who can decide and which rooms to prioritise. I sort and pack to those instructions, leaving uncertain items aside. You then book any charity collections or registered waste carrier directly. If a final clean is needed, we can discuss an independent cleaner.
Why sort first
Sorting gives you a chance to find paperwork, keepsakes and items for family before collection day. It also gives the clearance provider a clearer picture of the contents left to collect.
Donating and selling
Check directly with the charity or buyer before setting a collection date. Acceptance depends on the item and its condition. I can help prepare a list of items, but donation acceptance, valuations and collections are not guaranteed.
Who decides
The owner, or the person with authority for the home, decides what stays and goes. For a loved one's home, see bereavement sorting.
Do I need a skip?
Compare a collection service with a skip for the actual contents and access at your property. Ask the provider about accepted materials, permits where relevant and the full price. I do not hire skips or arrange waste removal. You contract directly with the provider.
A USEFUL FIRST MESSAGE
Tell me these three things
- Who is authorised to decide about the contents
- Your timescale and the rooms that matter first
- Items to retain, family decisions still pending and any planned collections
A short outline is enough. We can discuss the details together.

Packages book time for agreed priorities. They are not priced by the value of your home, and a fixed session does not promise completion of every room.
Larger work can be planned in stages and quoted individually. Extra time is £35/hour only with your agreement. Purchases, materials and specialist work are separate. See packages and booking details.
Useful questions
What's the average cost of a house clearance?
It depends on the contents and access. The collection provider quotes you directly. My sorting time is booked separately using the current organising sessions shown below, or a tailored plan.
Does anyone do house clearance for free?
Some charities collect saleable furniture and household items free of charge, subject to their acceptance checks. They don't usually take everything, so a carrier is often still needed for the rest.
Do house clearances pay you for items?
Some clearance firms deduct the value of saleable items from their price. Ask the carrier how they handle this in writing.
How much do charities charge for house clearance?
It varies by charity and area. Ask the charity directly; my donate guide lists local contacts.
How much does skip hire cost?
It depends on size, area and permits. Ask local firms for a price that includes any permit, and compare it with a carrier's quote for the same load.
